It was a very productive weekend. Finished wiring up the engine. Got all the hoses hooked up. Poured some gas in the tank, no leaks and started cranking. As soon as the carb had fuel thing fired right up. My grandfather and I’s guesses on the timing and the dwell on the points were almost right on the money. Listen to this purr! (I know I was holding the phone wrong, I was too excited)
After getting the timing set and adjusting the carb, turned to the back of the truck and put the bed back onto the frame. It still needs some adjustment to get lined up with the cab, but it got to hot to be crawling around under the truck, so will tackle it next weekend.

Sweet project.
Question, if I’m not too nosy, and you can also reply in PM : how much did that nice paint job cost you ?

Well I can say the paint was cheap as the white paint I already had from a 71 C10 my grandfather built. The primer and blue material supplies ran over a $1000. I rented a spray booth for $150 and then my grandfather painted it. We did all the bodywork and prep ourselves at the house. If you were having a shop do it wouldn’t be surprised if it ran near $10k

I like it. Is the wood stick a factory option?

Your truck looks great!
I’m c urious, though, how did you find a spray booth to rent?
I know eventually my Volvo project is going to need paint. I’m planning to do all the prep work myself at my house but don’t think my garage is conducive to painting, even if I were to create some kind of plastic enclosure or something.

IMO this is the best looking era Chevy truck ever made, and if I were to sell my ‘56 F100 to pick up a project all my own it would be one of these.
Well done

Well the booth was easy, the family that used to own the local auto paint supply store in town, they have a booth on their farm. He lets people he knows rent it. My grandfather had been buying paint and supplies from them for decades. In the past we have also gotten to know bodyshop guys and have rolled a car in after hours and spent the night spraying and getting it out before they start working the next day as well. Our 55 Chevy was done that way.
You can actually make a pretty good makeshift booth in your garage. All the white paint on my truck was done at the house. We only hauled the parts to the booth to lay down the blue metallic paint as we didnt have the lighting for spraying metallic.
We have sprayed a handful of cars in makeshift booths at home. Biggest keys are getting the floor really clean, wetting the floor down prior to spraying and then having air flowing in one direction.

Thanks! The 67-72 trucks are a pretty great all around truck, a lthough a 56 Ford pickup is a pretty sweet truck as well, I’ve always loved the look of those and would be the only other Ford pickup I would own next to my 33 Ford pickup I also have.

My dad had a good friend who had a really nice body shop, state of the art, and my dad used to do his cars like you did your 55. Unfortunately his friend passed away suddenly a couple years ago so we no longer have access to a body shop, and I don’t really know anyone in the business anymore.
I’m tempted to do the DIY booth in my garage. I could make it work, it would be difficult, but I think I could do it. But I may pay someone to do it, I don’t know. Everything I’ve ever tried to paint looks like crap. But I’ve got a lot of mechanical work and body work to do before I get to that point, so I’ve got time to think about it.
Thank you for all the info, and keep up the good work. Your truck looks so good !
